Well, you're actually right, IT IS a marketing magic trick but it's only effective when Apple is waving the wand, no other site could ever make people excited about new products being released because, let's face it, no one designs things like Apple does. I'm still druelling for that MacBook Air...

[...] So, save the wear and tear on your mouse and grab the badge rather than hitting refresh all morning this Tuesday. Pingdom also has a downtime history going, and an analysis of Apple’s “marketing by downtime.” After all, it is quite a well-planned marketing scheme, if not a growing national pastime for Apple fans.
You know I never even thought that it would have been a marketing stunt. Apple obviously has the technology to merge in new products into their online store with zero downtime, but to create the "apple buzz" by faking downtime is true genius. Props to Jobs for not only making lemonade out of lemons, but for faking the lemon problem in the first place.

Insightful of you to spot that ...

I think you're probably right.

Hey, the current steep downturn in the stock markets worldwide and the panicky sell-off reaction by retail investors is likely just another example of the same Pavlovian condioned reflex. What was that again that the stock analysts keep saying in the newspapers (whenever there's a more than small up or down in stocks) about the "markets" (read, humans - there is no such thing as a "market") being "driven by fear and greed"? ...
