Hi Brent,

Nice to have the founder of Hostgator commenting. Glad you liked the article, and there you go, it was more or less impossible for us to find all the domain names you host if your resellers use private name servers. That is unfortunately the side effect with this kind of survey. However, it still gives a good indication of your growth, we think, even if the numbers aren't necessarily absolute.

Keep up the good work. Looks like you're doing very well. :)

And David:
To get access to root zone files you need to contact the registries (for example Verisign for .com and .net), PIR for .org, etc. You will have to sign an agreement with them.

Great article Pingdom! You did leave out our websitewelcome.com name servers which represents 100k's of more domains that we host. We have over 18,000 reseller hosting clients which require more anonymity thus the websitewelcome name. Even when counting websitewelcome and hostgator.com name servers you are leaving about half our hosted domains out of the picture.

The majority of our resellers setup private name servers which makes it pretty close to impossible to figure out how many sites we are really hosting from your side. When we run our number it's about 1 million. We don't ping them to make sure they resolve so if we did that the number would probably be in the 800-900k range.

It seems that dreamhost leads the race. I always thought that hostgator was the leader in the business but it looks otherwise.

Though as far as affiliate businessa is concerned I think that hostgator is leading atleast in the webmaster forums. :)

I would like to do some statistical analysis on root zone files. I would like to know where i could gain access to them, it is even more interesting if i can get access to historical versions.

Sincerely,
David

Going by your observations, I think any company that takes the
initiative to provide a personal touch to their product by engaging on a direct one to one conversation has a great potential on gaining and keeping more customers.

Blogs and forums are two powerful ways that if done effectively can go along way in creating a competitive edge over other companies in your industry.
