@Lol Lolovici: Ok, that makes sense. I think in this case the comparison was relevant, though, since it is actual money going down the drain (not some hypothetical estimation of what could potentially have been earned, etc), but perhaps the report should have used some other phrasing (we didn't say it, they did :) ).

@pingdom: It is money lost but for you not for an abstract entity like the US economy or whatever music company. I was talking about generic estimates like these: "x thing costs the y industry w money each year". Completely different thing than saying "john doe paid x to repair his car".

@Lol Lolovici: If your car breaks down due to an inherent design flaw and you have to pay to have it repaired, is that not money lost...? :)

"software bugs cost the US economy $59.5 billion every year (imagine the global costs…)"

I suspect incorrect human decisions in all domains cost the world a million billion trillion $ every year. Perhaps an improved natural selection would reduce the costs.

It is ridiculous to state stuff like this, estimating how much was lost due to something not being done. Like money lost due to music pirating and so on. Money that don't exist are not money lost...

The 1980s close calls from the cold war make me think of the movie Wargames. So close to nuclear holocaust it makes me shudder.

Well, those days are over and now all is well in the world. Wait, hold on a second...
