WordPress turns 8 today

WordPressExactly eight years ago today, Matt Mullenweg announced that the first release of WordPress was available for download. We wonder if he knew what he was starting.

Much has happened with the blogging software since then. For one, WordPress has become the most popular blog platform in the world, which is no small feat. It’s also without a doubt one of the most successful open source projects ever created.

How many WordPress blogs are there? In December, there were more than 16 million self-hosted WordPress blogs. If you also count WordPress.com, the hosted WordPress blog service from Automattic, that number more than doubles. WordPress.com alone now hosts more than 20 million blogs.

And yes, this blog runs on WordPress. :)

We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Matt and the whole team at Automattic, as well as everyone else who has contributed to the development of WordPress through the years. It must feel good to have made such a big contribution to the evolution of the Web, and blogging in particular. As the saying goes, keep up the great work!

According to our stats, there are now more than 24.7 million self-hosted WordPress blogs. Not all of that was growth since December — we corrected some discrepancies in our statistics last month. Still, wow, eh? :-)

@Andrew: Definitely. Wow! :)

Wow! 24.7 million! That’s…. WOW! I have installed WP-blogs for many friends, and they really lika WP. I like WP, too. I uses it everytime I need a blog.

Nothing can out perform wordpress. It is really flexible. My friend started a site using Magento (a new CMS) and challenged me to make such a site using wordpress.

The result was obvious i made a similar site having same functionality as his Magento powered site within a single day using free plugins available !

Perceptions matter, and the perception of Nokia in the news, on the web, and in the minds of many, is that things aren’t going that well. Even in the Pingdom office, we hear “Nokia is doomed,” but do the numbers support this belief?

Looking at the statistics, Symbian leads the mobile operating system race with just over 30% of web browsing traffic. That’s down slightly from late last year, when we noted that Symbian finished 2011 as the top mobile operating system, with almost 34% of the mobile OS market.

What is even more interesting, however, is that Nokia is also ahead when we look at figures for all the mobile handset vendors. In fact, Nokia is way ahead of Apple, and Android lags far behind.
