WordPress completely dominates top 100 blogs

WordPress is no doubt a very popular web publishing platform for blogs and other types of websites. But just how popular is it?

We just completed a study and found that WordPress is in use by 48% of the top 100 blogs in the world. This is an increase from the 32% we recorded three years ago.

Other developments since then include that custom blog publishing platforms are more common now, TypePad has all but disappeared from the top 100, Tumblr has made an entrance, and some companies really don’t want to spill the beans about what solutions they use.

Update: Following a comment (see below) we have adjusted the article a bit. TUAW is running BlogSmith, so it has been removed from WordPress self-hosted. TMZ is running CrowdFusion, so it has been removed from BlogSmith, and CrowdFusion added to the list. This bring the total for WordPress to 48. We also adjusted Gawker and Gizmodo to being on Gawker’s platform, moving them from the Custom category.

WordPress is big, period

Just over three years ago we looked at what blog platforms and content management systems (CMS) were used by the sites listed in Technorati’s top 100 blogs. We found that WordPress was the number one blog platform with 32% of sites using it.

Doing the same survey now in 2012, we find that quite a bit has happened in three years. Most notably, WordPress now completely dominates the top 100, accounting for almost half of the blogs.

Here’s what we found in our survey:

Publishing platforms for top 100 blogs

You can read more about how we went about finding out what platform each site is using at the end of the article. To summarize it, we used common tools to try to figure out for ourselves first, what the site is using. Only if that did not reveal anything, did we try to contact the site’s owners and administrators directly to ask them.

Comparing 2009 to 2012

Now, lets look at some of the important findings of our 2012 study, especially the changes since 2009:

  • In total, WordPress has increased from 32 to 48 out of the top 100 blogs.
  • Hosted WordPress sites has increased from 5 to 9, while self-hosted solutions increased from 27 to 39.
  • TypePad has decreased dramatically, from 16 to only 2.
  • Movable Type lost quite a bit, dropping 5 sites.
  • Drupal gained 2 sites.
  • Out of the publisher-specific platforms, Gawker has decreased by 1 site, and BlogSmith by 10 sites.
  • Tumblr makes an entrance on the top 100 with 1 site.
  • CrowdFusion also makes an entrance on the list with 1 site.
  • Google’s Blogger is holding fairly steady, dropping 1 site down to 2.
  • Daily Kos is still the only site in the top 100 that runs Scoop.
  • Expression Engine and Bricolage drop out of the top 100.
  • The 8 sites marked as “N/a” we just didn’t manage to get any information about.
  • It’s very likely that a big chunk of the “N/a” sites are in fact custom, and if we add the two categories together, that’s 20% of the top 100 list.

We should point out that hosted “WordPress – hosted” includes WordPress.com and WordPress VIP SaaS. As the name would suggest, WordPress VIP Self-Hosted falls in the self-hosted category.

And if you want all the details, here are the aggregated numbers for all the platforms, in alphabetical order:

Top 100 blogs and their blog platforms – comparing 2009 and 2012
Platform 2009 2012
Blogger 3 2
BlogSmith 14 4
Bricolage 1 0
CrowdFusion 0 1
Custom 8 12
Diderot 0 1
Drupal 4 6
Expression Engine 1 0
Movable Type 12 7
Gawker 8 7
N/a 0 8
Scoop 1 1
Tumblr 0 1
TypePad 16 2
WordPress – hosted 5 9
WordPress – self-hosted 27 39

Looking at these developments it’s clear that a lot has happened in three years. Some platforms have lost ground, while others have gained, as could be expected.

WordPress Matt expects even more

In the three years since our last survey, not only has WordPress strengthened its grip on the top 100 blogs, it has all but taken over. At 48%, WordPress is clearly the dominating blogging platform as well as of growing importance as a more generic CMS.

It’s also interesting to see that our findings are not far off compared to what Technorati found in its State of the Blogosphere 2011 report. In it, Technorati found that 51% of blogs in the world use WordPress.

With WordPress having made such a strong advance recently, is there room for more growth?

Matt Mullenweg, the founding developer of WordPress as well as the founder (and Chief BBQ Taste Tester) of Automattic, certainly thinks so. We contacted him and he told us that he expects even more from WordPress in the coming years:

”The last few years we’ve really focused on both the usability and flexibility of WordPress, which has resulted in accelerating growth in both big and small sites. I expect even higher adoption among the largest sites and blogs over the next year.”

More secretive about platforms

One reason it took us so a while to publish this article was the problem with finding out from quite a number of sites what blog platform or CMS it was running.

In fact, one thing that seems to have happened since our survey in 2009 is that site owners and operators have become more secretive about their choice of platform.

In one case, we were even told by the person who is listed as the administrative contact on the domain registration, that he was under non-disclosure agreement to not reveal anything about the site.

So, in the last three years, big websites, or at least the people who run them, seem to have become more secretive about the technology behind them.

That’s just another example, we suppose, of how the blogging platform or CMS running a site, is a part of a site’s competitive advantage.

The blogging landscape is changing

There’s no denying that we have a certain affinity for WordPress, especially since it’s what we use for our blog. But we also find it very interesting to see how the blogging landscape has changed in just a few years. For example, we noted recently that Tumblr has reached 50 million blogs. That’s a remarkable feat for a site launched in 2007.

WordPress Matt may be optimistic about the future, but what will the situation really look like in 3 years time, if we do a similar survey then?

Only time will tell, but it’s safe to assume that WordPress will also then play an important role.

Methodology: Since the Technorati Top 100 is updated every day, we froze our list on March 20, 2012, and then set out to investigate what blog system or CMS each site is using. For each site, we started by using third-party services like BuiltWith, WhoIsHostingThis, and Wappalyzer, to see if they would reveal anything about the site. If that did not give us any results, we proceeded with tools like host, whois, and dig. Only if that still didn’t tell us what we needed, did we get in touch with the site through contact details published on the site (mainly email, phone, and Twitter), or in the domain registration. In most of the cases marked “N/a” the other party simply did not want to respond to our repeated requests. In just a few cases, they declined to answer.

You write: “Movable Type and Drupal have both decreased some.” Drupal went from 4 to 6–a 50% increase. How does that translate to “dropped some”?

 @chiMaxx Good catch :)

Your 2009 numbers in the table are swapped between “WordPress — Hosted” and “WordPress — Self-hosted”.

Of course, there’s a downside to WordPress’s dominance: Because it’s the #1 blogging platform, it’s the target of choice for hackers and malware authors (which means that WordPress bloggers need to be vigilant, especially if they’re hosting their own WP setups).

Very good point Durant Imboden.

 @MarkJaquith Thanks, fixed.

One correction — TUAW is Blogsmith, not WordPress — and TMZ is no longer Blogsmith, it’s CrowdFusion.

Crappy designed software upon a crappy designed language. It’s just sad.

@ChristinaWarren Thanks, will correct that :)

Gawker and Gizmodo are both on the Gawker platform. You have them listed as “custom.” Also, that means Gawker has only dropped one site — which makes sense, as we sold Fleshbot.

@RayWert Thanks for the input. We will adjust it.

Anybody surprised that Squarespace is nowhere to be seen, despite their advertising?

I think photomatt ’s quote is exactly why WordPress is winning. It’s low barrier to entry to start (easy to setup, WYSIWYG, free), and offers extreme customization for developers and larger sites, where they can self-host (still own all the of data), and tweak to their heart’s content. It’s the perfect platform to grow with, which explains why more of the top blogs keep showing up on the WordPress platform.

I would think more Open Source CMS’s like Joomla and Drupal would be hire, but since they are not as simple and easy for editorial to use, blogger quickly get discouraged and switch to WordPress, which is now the norm.

Not to mention the deep developer community, easy of plugin integration and third party apps. This really makes WordPress powerful for all types of users.

Self-hosted WordPress as a CMS is more flexible and easier to customize. And there are more web designers and developers capable of helping you maintain it or customize it. We find that it is the best choice for our clients. Though if you are just going to get your thoughts out and need a simple platform, Tumblr is certainly easy to begin using. Fewer controls mean fewer screw-ups. However, for a fully customized experience, we prefer self-hosted WordPress.

@CherylSmithem A valid point here too is that professionals that are creating blogs for clients tend to use WordPress because they can customize it off the bad, and then the end-user has a good experience.

Great data here! Thank you also to http://a-good-article.blogspot.com/ for sharing an interesting articles

Huff post still on Movable type! Wonder when they’ll be making the move. Anyone know?

On the one hand it’s great that WordPress is so successful – for one thing, I’ll be eternally grateful for its existence when we were setting up our company site. It does come with a downside though – the bigger it gets, the more motivation there is for hackers to attack it, and the more updates and security releases we need. When you’re running a site with a theme plus collection of plugins, all from different third parties who update to new release compatibility at different speeds, that is a pain in the butt!

I think the reason WordPress is so popular is because of the easy-to-use interface, the great amount of features and because it’s really stable. I used to code my own templates and never bothered to really gave a good look at WordPress because I found it to be too inflexible (i like to be in control of every little part of my website). But since I tested it for a new magazine/blog I am in the process of making right now I never want to go back. The flexibility and the great amount of available templates on the net are enough to convince me.

Your website is a great tool. Thanks, I bookmarked and looking forward to read more from your articles. Keep on making such important blog post. Your work is really being appreciated by someone.

I think the PlayStation Blog is a perfect example of how to present a lot of visual stimuli without overwhelming your audience. Visit a single post page and take a look at how unique the navigation bars and menus are configured. The comments are also visually appealing; this is an area of a blog that is often forgotten in the design process.
And what about http://smartmil.com?

@jennalanger To be honest, WordPress is a best thing that happened to me. Prior to that I was using Drupal and designed sites via css templates and pure html. But now, with such easy installation, great variety of plugins and premium like templates, WordPress is winning it all over for me.

WordPress is a dream of every wannabe and pro blogger. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the article. It seems like most big website companies fall under the category of a “blog” now, maybe that has evolved into referring to any site with constant fresh content.  My husband and I have been writing for a few start up sites like http://www.justthatproductions.com and http://www.justthat.co as well as others. We use WordPress and so far find it better to join an impressive big community like WP than venture out to use a secret format that no one has herd of yet.  The funny thing is that when I first started website building years ago the blog was considered the lesser version of a website. Now they have taken over and are what people want to see because it represents fresh content that is personalized by the blog owner. We are trying to run this type of platform from all our sites including http://www.mondeannuaire.com where I discuss high fashion trends and http://www.offroadsquad.com where my husband finds the best internet content to share about off roading. Both these niches have been so fun for us to not only write about but just finding the content and seeing all the great videos out there has been exciting. I hope more blog and web masters out there will continue in the traditional community support ways…we all get farther when we help each other. That being said we welcome guest authors on all our sites if you send us something new and interesting. Cheers!

That is pretty much what I would expect. WordPress is just so simple to use and looks professional. My only grip is the lack of drag and drop interface and because it is so popular it is more subject to hackers. Customization also could be a little easier.

WordPress wins without doubt as the most popular free CMS and it is exploding in popularity as well. Ebay, Sony, Ford, NFL and CNN- they are some of the prominent players in the brand cosmos that have one thing in common: They all use WordPress. World domination is just around the corner!

No more “missing in internet”!!
I found a very interesting site… BRAWDING.com  It looks like a simple board but is working like facebook, youtube and goole…. Internet marketing, making money, making friends, video, picture, chatting, camchat, broadcasting… everything is in there.  Members can write or upload whatever they want(even the commercial PR) and in several seconds it could be recognized by all the other visitors without waiting untill your site become famous. So you would not be left as a “missing in internet” any more.  Try go and look around.

WordPress will continue to be the dominant CMS because it is so easy to use. Also the customization puts it over the top. I do not see any immediate threat to their dominance.

VEDI CASI CUCCHI, MASTROGIOVANNI, BUDRONI, UVA, FERRULLI, CALIN, BIANZINO, TURRISI, FERRULLI E MIGLIAIA DI ALTRI DI CUI NON SAPPIAMO.. IN QUANTO VENNE STUPRATA DEMOCRAZIA E VERITÀ). UNO DI QUESTI POLIZIOTTI CAMORRISTI ED ASSASSINI É DI CERTO IL CRIMINALISSIMO PASQUALE RIZZIERI DEL COMMISSARIATO DI PORTA GENOVA A MILANO. PRESSO PIAZZA DEL VENINO. FIERI DI FARNE SAPERE AL MONDO INTERO. AMMAZZI PURE NOI, SE VUOLE. TANTO, UNA PERSONA CHE EGLI, SE NON MEGLIO DIRE, “ESSO”, HA FATTO FUORI IN PIÙ A FINI FASCISTI E MAFIOSI, ALIAS, A FINI BERLUSCONIANI .. O MENO…
