The ever-popular Slashdot was unreachable for over an hour last evening due to massive amounts of traffic hitting its network. Normally Slashdot is known for bringing other sites down with the traffic it generates (the so-called Slashdot effect, or slashdotting).

The blogging service Blog.com was unavailable almost 8 hours straight last Friday (January 16).

The outage started at 5:05 a.m. CET and didn’t end until 12:50 p.m. CET (a total of 7 hours and 45 minutes). The site was completely unreachable during that time, indicating either a server or network failure.

Netvibes-competitor Pageflakes was unavailable for close to 7 hours last Friday (January 9).

The longest outage started at 1:49 p.m. EST, when the site went down for 6 hours and 38 minutes. It was completely inaccessible during this time.

The website of the UK bookstore Blackwell was unavailable for more than 7 hours this Wednesday, December 10. Blackwell is the largest academic bookseller in the UK, and one of the first to start selling books online.

Technorati refused access to website visitors

At 8:38 a.m. EST yesterday, December 3, the Technorati website all of a sudden started refusing access to all visitors, responding with an HTTP 403 error (access denied). The problem was not resolved until 9:44 a.m.

Wikia Search is having severe website problems

Wikia Search, the Web search engine from Wikia, Inc. has been having recurring problems with their website since 2 p.m. EST on Monday (December 1).

One third of the requests to the website result in a HTTP 503 server error message (service unavailable).

Sears website buckled on Black Friday

The online bargain-hunting on Black Friday caused problems for several e-commerce websites, but none was affected worse than Sears.com. The website buckled under the pressure of the increased visitor numbers and was unavailable for large parts of the day.
