These days if you try to find news involving the word “cloud,” you’re more likely to get an article about cloud computing than you are finding a weather report. If the amount of news referencing “cloud” is anything to go by, the media has embraced this new terminology with open arms, starting in 2008.

Are young Internet users less stingy than old ones? That certainly seems to be the case when it comes to paying for online content according to a new survey by paidContent:UK.
In the survey, 1,188 UK adults between the ages 16-64 were asked what they would do if their favorite news site started charging money. The results weren’t exactly what you might expect.

Music and video streaming services in themselves are nothing new (as YouTube and others can attest to), but what is new is that finally some companies seem to be getting the big content providers on board. Spotify is gathering buzz with its music streaming service, and Voddler is about to launch a similar service for movies and TV series. And guess what? Both can be used for free.

It has been widely reported that Google’s Gmail has been having problems lately. Now it seems like Microsoft perhaps had a hand in spreading the news coverage, fanning the flames a bit.
Here is a quote from an InformationWeek article about the recent Gmail outages:
That didn’t stop a Microsoft spokesperson from reaching out to me to make sure I was aware of the current Google Apps problems. The spokesperson said to me in an e-mail, “The Gmail outage was reported (and buried) on a discussion board yesterday and a solution is expected (but not promised) by EOD today — 24 hrs later.”
He implied that the story wasn’t getting the press that it should.
So, basically, Microsoft’s PR people are trying to make sure that Google’s trouble gets as much attention as possible.
We were curious if this happens a lot. Do companies often contact journalists to point out the failings of their competitors?
