How we found these domain names

We found all of these domain names by processing the root zone file for the .com top-level domain. We also confirmed that the domain names in this post are owned by Google by looking at domain WHOIS information for the ones we included.

It is likely that many of these domain names have been registered by Google either to protect their brand, and in some cases to prevent typosquatting and similar practices. Google lawyers have surely been keeping busy reclaiming lots of Google-related domain names over the years.

For those interested, here is a complete Excel file with all .com domain names that point to the Google DNS servers ns1.google.com-ns4.google.com. Note that not all of them will be owned by Google (but most are) so you will need to confirm ownership with a WHOIS lookup.

We hope you found this collection interesting. 🙂

  1. 1p0g0og1e.com looks like it’s one of a few dozen they have that look anything like “IPO Google” so I’d guess they’re all a few years old.

  2. They don’t “work” because Google registered them to keep others from getting them. Just because Google didn’t put anything to hold its place (I’m sure they don’t want everyone to know they own googlewarez.com).

Great list…I thought I had a few good ones myself, but it looks like I will need to build up my collection before I have anything to brag about.

  3. Of course some of those domain names could have been taken from people who had registered them, thus breaching Google’s trademark.

Its doesnt really mean the big G went out and registered them all….

  4. In reply to Anand – Yahoo can’t do anything about it unless they could prove that Google was in some way either benefiting from pretending to be a Yahoo service or if they were using the domain name in bad faith, i.e. to damage Yahoo’s image

Still I don’t see why either would see those domains as key – but obviously someone did to register it. Probably the same person that thought it would be vital to secure goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle.com(!)

Sounds to me like Google needs to hire a better domain name management specialist…

  5. the googlesucks and gamilsucks type domains are probably bought because if someone else owned them GooGle can NOT sue for copyright infringement.

  6. Looks like many people have tested g{insert a lot of o}gle.com one time or another. I have. Why dont g secure all the gooooooooooooooooole.com etc domains? Nice list btw. 🙂

  7. Wow interesting post, would not imagine them owning so many domain names. However im concerned about fan based website http://www.googlefocus.com
Could this regarded as trademark infringement??

BIg G does have the money to able corner the market, popular search terms related keywords. Can someone argue that donationcard.com is not related to their business, and really they are squatting on some names. i have often wondered why they have not entered the domain name marketplace/registration.

  8. It seems that Google is using a 3rd party service that is registering possible illicit domain usage.
For many of the domains, the registrar is Markmonitor.com , which “Prevents illicit domain abuse tactics—such as cybersquatting and domain kiting—by using defensive domain registration to block others from exploiting domain names associated with your brand”
