American Express homepage down for 5 hours

American Express logoThe American Express homepage ( was unavailable for over five hours today. During that entire time the page responded with an HTTP 404 error (page not found). Visitors to the homepage were met by a simple text message: “File not found.”

The problem lasted from 05:47 a.m. to 10:52 a.m. Central European Time (11:47 p.m. yesterday to 04:52 a.m. today US Eastern Time).

This is the first time in 2008 that the American Express homepage has had any downtime. A previous report from Pingdom comparing the availability of credit card company websites showed the American Express homepage having 100 percent uptime during the period leading up to Christmas.

This appears to have been unplanned downtime. If American Express were performing planned website maintenance, a maintenance message should have been shown on the homepage.

  1. While the whole site is not always down. The Accounts portion of the site, where customers access their activity history, balances, etc. Is down for multiple hours several times a month at all hours of the day. I know because I use the site frequently do my expenses and I am often locked out without recourse until the next day. Or in todays case Feb 3, 2009. Two days in a row. Not a happy camper.

  2. One more thing to add, I just received a regular email from Amex: “Account Alert: Your Account Snapshot”. Yet, when I click on “View Recent Activity”, the broswer I use cannot open the page!

  3. I’ve also noticed the site down for two days. Let’s just hope that each time we try to login someone is not phishing our account and password information while the IT guys at American Express are on Labor Day break. I wish American Express would post something about the problem on their homepage to clarify what the problem is.

  4. Just got off phone and they said it is related to users with COMCAST as their ISP and that the problem is on COMCAT’s side. Is everyone with a problem using COMCAST ?

  5. American Express website was down yesterday Sept 6 and today Sept 7, 2009. I still get the emails with account overview and make payment option….just can not make the payment. AGAIN.

  6. I used my company’s VPN to access my desktop at work. From my work PC, which does NOT use Comcast, I was able to log-in to American Express without any problem.

I believe Ray is correct: This appears to be a Comcast issue.

  7. I’m a Comcast customer. Straight Comcast can’t get to American Express. But when I fire up my corporate VPN, I get to Amex. So it must be true: it’s a Comcast thing.

  8. Yes, I just connected to my work and had no problem. Definitely a Comcrap problem. I use Quicken, so I just saved the .qfx file so I can update until Comcast gets their act together.

  9. Okay, so if this is a Comcast problem, who is going to get this fixed: Comcast or Amex? We’re not talking about one or two customers here. And I thought this was just a long weekend Amex maintenance issue!

  10. Amex website down again this morning Wed., Jan. 27/10. This is the message on the website:

    “Our System is Not Responding

You may experience intermittent delays. We apologize for this inconvenience. While we are working to correct the problem, you can:
